The War Against Evolution

There has been much hand-wringing in academia of the "threat" to the scientific consensus of evolutionary theory posed by creationism or "intelligent design". Need we be so concerned with the beliefs of the creationist? Evolution would continue whether or not the creatures it brought about believe in it.

The real threat to evolution - as it has hitherto operated in bringing ourselves into existence - comes not  from those who attribute its works to the design of a deity, but from those who would assume the role of the designer, wielding unnatural powers with which to alter the invisible hand of natural selection. As such the war against evolution is waged by the war machine itself, whereby the course of evolution is stunted by, shall we say, smashing its hand ...

Berkeley Daily PlanetAmerica’s Legacy of Mutagenic War

Thanks to the US military’s embrace of Mutagenic Weapons — technologies that can poison cell tissue and ransack the human DNA far into the future — babies and children have become the latest form of "collateral damage." Today, in Vietnam and in Iraq (and in Kosovo and Afghanistan), children are being born with deadly cancers, grotesque tumors, twisted or missing limbs, freakishly enlarged heads, and a range of horrific mutations...

Or more deliberately steering its hand through the selection of warrior phenotypes...

Secrecy NewsJASONs Ponder Military Role in Gene Research

For military purposes, it will be up to the Department of Defense “to determine which phenotypes… have special relevance to military performance and medical cost containment” and then presumably to select for those.  “These phenotypes might pertain to short- and long-term medical readiness, physical and medical performance, and response to drugs, vaccines, and various environmental exposures…. More specifically, one might wish to know about phenotypic responses to battlefield stress, including post-traumatic stress disorder, the ability to tolerate conditions of sleep deprivation, dehydration, or prolonged exposure to heat, cold, or high altitude, or the susceptibility to traumatic bone fracture, prolonged bleeding, or slow wound healing.”

“Both offensive and defensive military operations may be impacted by the applications of personal genomics technologies through enhancement of the health, readiness, and performance of military personnel.  It may be beneficial to know the genetic identities of an adversary and, conversely, to prevent an adversary from accessing the genetic identities of U.S. military personnel.”

This remains akin to the pastoral "guiding" of natural selection as found in agricultural hybridization or animal husbandry. With the onset of transgenic technology, however, the hand is unnaturally forced at the molecular level, whence genes are inserted into species' genomes that otherwise, through the normal mechanisms of genetic recombination, would never occur, whether through vertical gene transfer, i.e. sexual reproduction, or through horizontal gene transfer, which recent findings suggest not only occurs with great regularity, but is crucial to the symbiotic health of the "microbiome" ...

God and ScienceWhy Sex With Robots is Always Wrong - The Impending Demise of the Human Species

Given the glacial rate of evolution on planet Earth by natural processes, the artificial factors being introduced by human kind will induce alterations of species and ecosystems that are unprecedentedly rapid and unpredictable, leading to an outcomes that may perhaps be innocuous, with the trans-genes swallowed by the resilience of nature, or potentially disastrous, applying a mono-culture eraser to the genetic diversity of the biosphere. Given the unpredictability inherent in complex systems, such as is life on Earth, the precautionary principle is in order. Unfortunately, GMOs have been introduced with little in the way of precautionary study, thus rendering entire populations effectively as guinea-pigs in a vast, uncontrolled experiment...
