Sarkozy, in his continuing efforts to spearhead the remaking of global capitalism, hosted what was originally to be an international summit, but which ended up being a mere conference, with the title:
New World: Values, Development and Regulation
In AP's report from the conference:
Sarkozy blamed financial speculators for encouraging a system fueled on debt. He called financial capitalism based on speculation "an immoral system" that has "perverted the logic of capitalism."
"It's a system where wealth goes to the wealthy, where work is devalued, where production is devalued, where entrepreneurial spirit is devalued," he said.
But no more: "In capitalism of the 21st century, there is room for the state," he said.
The Pope's newly adopted poodle, Tony Blair, chimed in...
Blair called for a new financial order based on "values other than the maximum short-term profit."
"The greatest entrepreneur I had the chance to meet was passionate about what he had created, not what he had accumulated," he said.
However, Andrea Merkel, critical of the the neo-Keynesian measures of the US & UK, said (as reported in The Hindu) “We would be making an error if we were content to look solely at financial markets,” while suggesting that factors of trade and budgetary deficits play a larger role in the financial crisis.
As The Hindu story notes, the conference had been downgraded from a summit, and so produced no binding resolutions "after the Czech Republic, which took over the EU’s six-month rotating presidency on January 1, expressed some irritation at continued French grandstanding."
To remind, Czech president Klaus has a curious history with Russian interests.
Meanwhile, Russia has been toying with Europe's energy spigot.

Entertainer of the Year
The title goes to Alex Jones, which is not to downplay the seriousness of his subject matter, this Michel Foucault for the masses... If Foucault were alive today, one imagines he would be sounding the alarm bells upon these same subjects... the militarization of police, surveillance swarming amuck, the psychotropic administration of children, the technocratic economization of nutrition, the transhumanist appetite to cull population, and so on. The "power/knowledge" nexus which he traced in the 1960 & '70s has now only amplified all the more; so that what Foucault called the "carceral society," Jones can now call the "prison planet."
At times he gets a bit clausterphobic and loses it...

2009: Ordo Ab Chao?
This would seem to be the hope of Europe's leadership, that out of financial crisis comes the opportunity to forge a new global regime of financial governance.

Crisis may be useful, but collapse is another matter. 2008 was crisis, but as many prognosticators forebode, 2009 could be complete meltdown, bringing a period of chaos the likes of which we have only had fortastes in Iceland and in Greece, with predictions of Weimar-style worldwide hyperinflation, civil unrest & martial law in the USA, to the brink of a tumult unheard of since the American Revolution, only this time engulfing the world...
Are these European leaders really so confident they can tame this beast? At the Dec. 8 meeting, there was something of a white elephant in the room, namely the absence of a German representative.

Steinbrueck went as far as to dub the British government's use of heavy borrowing to boost its economy as "breathtaking" and "crass Keynesianism," referring to 20th century British economist John Maynard Keynes who advocated governments should spend their way out of recession.

Soon to be EU President Vaclav Klaus is alleged to have been the KGB's rat of Prague in his youth.

We can reveal exclusively that Mr. Klaus, while a 21-year-old student at the University of Economics, Prague, in 1962, was recruited by Czech counterintelligence officers and put to work as a spy against democratic reformers with whom he studied and later worked. For five decades he has concealed a murky past of betrayal and deception.
Codenamed "Vodichka," Mr. Klaus is said to have been "an avid and willing informant" who reported on the political reliability of his classmates -- two of whom were expelled because of the information he provided.
For his cooperation, Mr. Klaus was allowed to travel abroad on research projects --first to Italy in 1966, and three years later to Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Mr. Klaus is understood to have reported to Czech intelligence officers on the activities of Czech opposition groups within the United States during the aftermath of the "Prague Spring" rebellion.
In 1970 Mr. Klaus starred in "Operation Rattrap," staged by Czech counterintelligence with the assistance of Soviet KGB advisers. Mr. Klaus was publicly named as an "anti-socialist malcontent" and "purged" from the Economic Institute. Its purpose was to pose Mr. Klaus as a "victim" of the regime so he could continue to penetrate dissident circles as a deep-cover mole. The ruse was successful and Mr. Klaus effectively monitored opposition activities and reported dissident intentions, succeeding also in establishing a personal relationship with underground leader Vaclav Havel, who would become the Czech Republic's first democratically-elected president in 1993.
Mr. Klaus was officially "rehabilitated" by the state in 1987 to allow him to join the Economic Forecasting Institute of the Academy of Sciences -- "a nest of counterrevolution," in the minds of Czech counterintelligence officials, who wanted it infiltrated. Again, Mr. Klaus was their man. Successfully planted within its ranks, he informed on the activities of other members while further building his reputation as a subversive.
Of note, Putin (ex-KGB) and Klaus are said to have spoken in Russian during talks in '06.
President Vaclav Klaus said at the beginning of the talks with Putin that Putin's visit to Prague was necessary. He offered Putin to conduct the talks in Russian, which was called an honour by Putin. Klaus and Putin are to discuss economy, culture, struggle with terrorism and military cooperation. Two memorandums and a framework loan agreement are to be signed in their presence. A festive dinner will be given for Putin by Klaus.
